Welcome to the UWEC-Bangkok Blogsite

Photographs and information that documents our travels will be added soon here......

A group of students from the Department of Art & Design at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will travel with professors Jyl Kelley and Wanrudee Buranakorn from Eau Claire, Wisconsin to Thailand from June 24th to July 14th 2010 to embark on collaborative research in the arts.

On June 9th our group will present lectures at Assumption University, Department of Visual Communication Arts in Bangkok.  The plan is to introduce the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire’s Department of Art and Design as individuals present their own professional research.   In turn, students and faculty from Assumption University will present their School and professional research.

While in Thailand our group has several goals:
1.    To collaborate with Thai students and faculty in the installation of a photographic exhibition by Thai/American artist Wanrudee Buranakorn.  This exhibition entitled “Language In-Form” is curated by UWEC professor Jyl Kelley.

2.    To investigate each of our interests in Visual Art by comparing Thai culture and American culture on various topics.

“Language In-Form” is a retrospective exhibition of photographic imagery produced by Thai/American artist Wanrudee Buranakorn in the past 13 years.   The title suggests visual language meant to enlighten and also refers to the female form.  Buranakorn, who now lives and works in the United States will return to her homeland to display her artworks for the first time. This crossing of cultural boundaries is especially interesting to our group who seeks new cultural perspectives.   “Language In-Form” has become a catalyst for each of our  individual research interests in exploring visual art in Thailand.  An exhibition of student and faculty work will be scheduled in 2010/11 to present new works developed on this trip. We hope to show work both in America and Thailand.

The UWEC Art and Design students traveling to Thailand are Kaleb Durocher, Marguerite Berg, Daniel Smith and Rachel Konsella.
